Comparative advantage can be displayed profoundly with Apple. They have a very strong comparative advantage over the competition and really do not live by the rule that it takes three times to get something right. They have quality products and they get it right the first time.
This article explained what is comparative advantage and how to determine it. The author then uses examples of different firms or countries and different industries to highlight the principles of comparative advantage. The examples are Apple for exciting, well-marketed technology products, Pakistan for low cost clothing manufacturing, and Colombia for expertise in drug trafficking, which I found to be a very creative but also relevant example.

The author then poses the question of how you determine if you have a comparative advantage? In some cases, it is apparent. Apple is celebrated for its elegant design, and its sales and profits point to its comparative advantage. Pakistan’s case may be the easiest to make, as it can compare production costs and prices with other low-cost countries, such as China. In clothing, Pakistan can beat China by several dollars per piece.

Colombia was again the most interesting example, as it seems to excel in a number of illegal activities along with drug trafficking. Here the comparative advantage seems to be fostered by a permissive environment in which family, church, state, and other societal institutions don’t seem to exert the law-abiding influence we see in other countries.

The author also discusses a theory from a devil’s advocate who states that in some cases, comparative advantage is ignored and countries and firms may decide to outsource work simply because they don’t want to do it. The author rightly points out that the opportunity cost has to be considered, and it may be the motivation behind the outsourcing.
