They follow a similar move by Canadian retailers made last week.
\n
\nRIM sold 200,000 units this past quarter, down from the 500,000 sold in the initial quarter earlier in the year. In comparison, Apple sold 11 million iPads in its most recent quarter.
\n
\nPart of the reason for the PlayBook's poor performance is attributed to negative reviews from users as well as industry analysts and publications. One of the greatest weaknesses seems to be its inability to run an email application without being linked to a Blackberry or smartphone. RIM has promised a new version which will resolve the standalone email issue.
\n
\nRIM released the PlayBook in April, and the market has become much more crowded since then, most notably by Amazon's Fire tablet, released in September at $199. Barnes and Noble also rolled out a tablet version of its Nook this month. Not mentioned in the article, but also relevant is that a glance through the Black Friday circulars will provide a list of lesser-name tablet devices beyond those from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
\n
\nAccording to an analyst at Cormark Securities, network externalities play a large part in the success of a tablet device. "To get some buzz on these devices, you need a broader content ecosystem, and they[RIM] don't have that."
\n
\nAmong other retailers, Wal-Mart and Best Buy are now offering the PlayBook at $200, down from $500. It seems that Angry Birds and other applications contribute a large part of the value to these devices.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43584844","dateCreated":"1317672187","smartDate":"Oct 3, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Kschoon2","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kschoon2","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1317157889\/Kschoon2-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/mbaeconfall2011.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43584844"},"dateDigested":1532762571,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Monopolistic Competition","description":"Looking around the internet I found the following link:
