The market demand curve is the same as the firm\u2019s demand curve.
\n
\nFour sources create monopoly power: economies of scale, economies of scope, cost complementary and patents and legal barriers. In a monopoly there is no supply curve. To maximize profits the firm produces output where marginal revenue equals marginal cost. Not all monopolies have positive profits. In the real-world there is generally not just one firm that controls an entire industry, but having significant market power can constitute a monopoly.
\n
\nThe Sherman Antitrust act was passed in response to price fixing. The Department of Justice helps to promote competition and to block potential monopolies that are harmful to the public.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47585506","dateCreated":"1323100008","smartDate":"Dec 5, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"AnqiFang","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/AnqiFang","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/mbaeconfall2011.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47585506"},"dateDigested":1532762570,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Monopoly in The Real World","description":"In the textbook case of a monopoly, there is only one firm producing the good. This article talks about Apple filing suit agains Samsung for violating patents with its Galaxy line of products. Apple claims the hardware, user interface and even packaging of the Galaxy are clear violations of Apple's patented designs. The funny part is that Samsung is Apple's second largest supplier of parts for it's iPhone and iPad products and Samsung receives 7.6 percent of its revenue from the sale of Apple products.
